Extraction: Projection

Framing The Penzance Convention, and deepening exploration of the theme, The Exchange presented an exhibition of projected image work in the weeks running up to the event, with support from the LUMA Foundation.

The Extraction: Projection exhibition opened with screenings of The Silver and the Cross (2010) by Harun Farocki and Amnesialand (2010) by Stefanos Tsivopoulos. Guest curator José Roca from Colombia then presented his screening programme, ‘Exploration, Extraction and Market’, selected in response to the theme. The programme concluded with a screening programme entitled ‘Sugar in the Air’ selected by curators Daniel Muzyzcuk and Agnieszka Pindera from Poland. Each programme ran for six days and the curators visited Cornwall to talk about their selections.

Running concurrently, The Exchange presented archive footage compiled by Awen Productions from South West Film and Television Archive relating to Cornwall’s extractive industries – mining, fishing and farming. Also on view were compilations of films made by Holman’s Film Unit in Camborne, screened courtesy of the Trevithick Society. These programmes were screened in an environment designed by artist Abigail Reynolds.
