Robin Shail

Robin Shail graduated in Geology from the University of Oxford in 1986 and has been involved in teaching and research related to the geology of South West England ever since. He has a PhD from the University of Keele on the Devonian tectonics of south Cornwall and has worked as a lecturer in geology at the Camborne School of Mines (CSM) / University of Exeter since 1990.

He is an enthusiastic field geologist and Cornwall’s spectacular landscape forms an essential backdrop and natural laboratory for much of his teaching and research activities. These range from the understanding of large-scale tectonic processes resulting in ocean formation and continental collision in the Devonian through the generation of granites and mineralisation in the Permian to contemporary problems of coastal landsliding. He is involved in contract research with local extractive industry on the characterisation of potential mineral resources and has been involved in an EU-funded collaborative project ‘ImpactMin’ investigating the socio-economic impacts of mining in Europe and Russia. He lives with his partner and three children just outside Penzance.
